[Much of the shoddiness comes from losing the best writers after the Writer's Strike and the will-won't renewal debate in S2. The replacement writers were not as skilled.]

So yes its long because the wonderful (and bad) parts of Chuck were long; possibly the most complex look at love and marriage on TV.

[Awesome was smart but also an Abercrombie and Fitch Model, but most importantly was "intermediated" i.e. when he and Ellie made eyes at each other in the classroom, the Med-School makeout session in a supply closet commenced immediately. This was not an "Arranged Marriage" so much as the function of family, friends, institutions, that "vouched" for character on both sides. Each knew the other was disciplined, of good character, and high IQ. And thus suited for family mating, not just the empty no-risk relationships the Sarah character indulged in.]Whiskeyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01854764809682029464noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3893665144141962944.post-16739269393659896262012-01-31T11:25:57.283-08:002012-01-31T11:25:57.283-08:00Why didn't Captain Awesome's intelligence ...Why didn't Captain Awesome's intelligence hurt him with women?Jacknoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3893665144141962944.post-735596163732462612012-01-31T09:29:43.545-08:002012-01-31T09:29:43.545-08:00Should we just fuck Mexican girls, then?Should we just fuck Mexican girls,then?joshnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3893665144141962944.post-80157178372009697682012-01-31T05:22:33.151-08:002012-01-31T05:22:33.151-08:00Not to miss the point, but I think you need to be ...Not to miss the point, but I think you need to be careful putting too much emphasis on the endless romance as anything more than a reliable trope to keep a series going. You see it in most shows featuring men and women. Viewers are interested in the chase and the tension in the hunt; the kill is anti-climatic and once the dynamic changes it can turn the viewers off. So you either have an endless chase or catch and release over and over again. I don't think it reflects any underlying Hollywood thinking of relationships so much as it reflects the thinking of TV execs who want to keep the gravy train running for as long as possible.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3893665144141962944.post-42538143684173479472012-01-31T05:21:28.321-08:002012-01-31T05:21:28.321-08:00Yes, the point needs to be made. Their romantic lives are ruined, and with them the chance for most (save the wealthiest celebrities) at any possibility of a happy family life. This ought to be the real driving dramatic choice, and matching one in real life? How do I know that the last best hope I have for a guy who will stick with me when I get old and ugly is not walking past right now? That is the dramatic situation women ought to be given, by the Church of Television.'

There was a study I read on Foseti's sight that was done in India. It said that romantic love wears off pretty fast, while in arranged marriages, the love starts out pretty low and increases over time and passes romantic love pretty quickly. I think this is more of a grown up way to live than this being swept off your feet kind of love. Once that wears off what do you have? Divorces. People, especially women, think life is supposed to be a continual episode of the Bachelor.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3893665144141962944.post-23426989189134929752012-01-30T19:45:12.695-08:002012-01-30T19:45:12.695-08:00Women initiate divorce 66% of the time. Culturally, w...Jason -- the point needs to be made. Culturally, we have come to the point where only an outside force / act of God can put people together.

Or, in contradictory terms, autonomy absent cultural institutions, means extreme individualism and extreme loneliness.

Chuck was not junk, it was only half junk. That's illustrative because the show evolved, in direct proportion to the desire to cater to the female 18-34 audience, and even then the result was divided.

The show made a repeated point to illustrate how lonely the female lead Sarah was. I have literally never seen that social truth depicted anywhere. Her "career" literally cut her off from anyone, and any genuine warm, human contact. At least part of her motivation was to be half/half: getting a social connection and set of friends, pseudo family, but without fully committing.

As both a reflection and commentary on the complete absence of the usual way pre-1965 people met and fell in love, the show was pretty much a groundbreaker.

As far as the Bartowskis being "Jewish" ... the siblings make a big deal out of Christmas, are never shown to be observing any Jewish religious ceremony, and are completely immersed in pop culture. The one Jewish character was played by the Indian guy, Lester (Vik Sahay), who was Indian-Jewish (and yes there are a few Jews from India). That bizarre touch (LA gets EVERY weird sub-set of humanity) seemed both funny and "real" the way LA can be.

TV entertainment is important because it both reflects and shapes the opinions of about half the population. Since I'd like them on the Conservative side of things I pay close attention there.

And TV at its best has possibilities no other medium has: TIME. A TV show when good, can take five years or so to develop fully a character based on the interaction of fans, an actor's talent, a consistent group of talented writers, and a producer with vision. No other medium offers the emotional impact, like atomic energy, TV can be used for good (making the culture better) or worse. Its just a tool.

Currently yes TV is focused almost exclusively on women. BUT entertainment for women can be both compelling and enjoyable for that audience if it tells them social truths, not convenient fictions.Whiskeyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01854764809682029464noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3893665144141962944.post-72517005638504399462012-01-29T12:57:40.369-08:002012-01-29T12:57:40.369-08:00TV is porn for females, it simultaneously shapes a...TV is porn for females, it simultaneously shapes and reinforces their fears, hates, desires, biases across the cultural spectrum -- relationship, law, social custom

TV is like every other element of modern civ -- a profitable feedback-loop for corrupt and hypocritical matriarchy, and an unparalled propaganda tool for entrenching, rationalizing, and expanding matriarchy

absent social restraint, females will simply demand to be romanced forever -- vanity, vanity, vanity thy name is woman -- and even when presented with the Prince, she'll tire of him in short order, and cast him off for the Next Thrill so she can pretend she's fifteen the rest of her life

that, of course, is a disaster for boys and men, and death to civilization . . . the little boys who DESPERATELY need and want men present in their lives CONSISTENTLY, are not featured on TV . . . we do not episodically follow their weeping at night for their fathers, their abuse by single females, their lostness and grief in a male-despising culture

this doesnt represent the Demanded Drama that females crave, and of course receive

no negative impact on Fem, therefore: problem doesnt exist

(hey what time does Everybody Loves Raymond come on?)

much easier to feed the impossible (but profitable) fantasies of women than maintain a healthy and balanced society

"Openly gay personalities are beloved on TV, from Ellen, to Neil Patrick Harris, to the entire cast it would seem of Fox's "Glee," beloved of tweens, teen girls, and their moms."

providing constant drama and titillation that is "safe" from any hint of the Nasty Maleness so evident in that dreg of society, the heterosexual male

plugging into TV = plugging into the Matrix, it's not called the Patrix, for a reason

yeah your pals are great actors and actresses etc etc, but the result is still the dissemination of pathology that utterly ignores the deleterious effects such propaganda has on one-half of society (the non-female half)

you couldnt pay me to have cable, TV is evil and the plug should be pulled permanently, while one dad still remains in the westlittle dynamohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11380746207592226835noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3893665144141962944.post-47844586136777078362012-01-29T12:33:01.563-08:002012-01-29T12:33:01.563-08:00I don't want much tv as I cant stand it and th...I don't want much tv as I cant stand it and the values it spews.
